  • Wave 2 (mid-2020s): augmentation
  • Wave 3 (2020–2030): autonomy

As technology advances and is implemented across the economy, job displacement could become increasingly frequent. During the first wave of automation, which is set to start in the early 2020s, we can expect a relatively low displacement of existing jobs, estimated at around 3%. However, by the mid-2030s, this could rise to as much as 30%. 

Men could be particularly affected in the long run, as autonomous vehicles and other machines replace many manual tasks where their share of employment is higher. In the first and second waves, however, women could be more vulnerable to automation, due to their higher representation in clerical and other administrative functions.

An analysis of 29 countries suggests that automation could have a significant impact on global employment levels in the long term. The median value across all countries is estimated to be around 30%, with the UK close to the average. Asian and Nordic countries are expected to see the lowest impact, with just 20-25% of jobs at risk, while Eastern European countries could experience the highest, with over 40% of jobs at risk.
